Genre research

R&B Magazines- Although this magazine is classed as a R&B this style of music has changed from that which was heard in the 60's from this style/genre. It started in the 60's with Motown but the up to date version of R&B music is more Hip hop.

Pop Magazines
Pop is a popular music genre which originated form in the 1950's, deriving from rock and roll. As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, and rock.

Jazz Magazines- Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th Century with a regular rhythm, and typically played on brass and woodwind instruments.

Heavy Metal Magazines
Heavy metal developed in the late 1960-1970's. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with  aggression.  Heavy metal music has massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, and overall loudness.

Country Magazines
Country music uses lyrics that tend to describe family life, love, real life issues and loss.Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars. Country music is a genre of American popular music that originated in the rural regions of the Southern United States in the 1920's.

Overall, I have chosen R&B for my magazine because I know more about artists and listen to R&B music. I have chosen this genre because personally I think more people know who the artists and bands are because they are in the media and have a high profile. This type of music suits a large range of age groups and has stood the test of time.

LIIAR analysis of a double page spread

Language: The layout of this double page spread has a main feature, which is the image of Florence Welsh,  it takes up a full page (long shot), and has used the bold colour red to contrast/ stand out from the light back ground. The image makes the page look full and prevents the page from looking too congested with excess text. This  large main image has been used to attract the readers attention, drawing them into reading the rest of the article. The use of the dark shade of grey  attracts the public towards the letters 'USA', which gives a key word about what the article is about. The heading 'got the love' is important as it is one of Florence's well known songs, which will immediately attract the audience, it is catchy and is in a stylish font, which adds glamour to the double page spread. The model is looking straight into the lens, which could suggest that the article is very direct and straight to the point.

Institution:Vibe magazine is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. Vibe magazine features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by the private equity investment fund Inter Media Partner. This magazine is now issued every-other month with double covers, with a larger on line presence.

Ideology: The use of red, light background and the highlighted words in blue, 'Florence Welsh' link to the article, as it is all about Florence Welsh with her American fans 'America at her feet'.

Audience: The audience is relevant to both male and female readers, however, the genre is aimed at R&B and hip hop, attracting young, urban fans of hip hop and R&B culture

Representation: The colours used in the double paged spread represent America as they have used the colours in the American flag. (Red stripes on the block Florence is sat on, light/white background and blue highlighted words; Florence Welsh)

LIIAR analysis of music magazines contents page

Language:  The background is plain, but has a darker shade of grey, this is shaped as a half hidden V which shows that it is from the Vibe magazine. Kanyes clothing is classed as fashionable in today's world,  this indicates that Vibe is not only a music magazine but also about other things like fashion, celebrities and culture. The type of shot that has been used is medium long shot, which frames the subject from the hip upwards, although it still allows the audience to see the models emotions and feelings. This type of shot has been used as it is the main feature of the magazine so needs to be the main attraction of the page. The shape of the letter 'V' is at a slight angle to add depth into the main image, because if it was a straight 'V' it wouldn't look three dimensional and the model would look stuck on. The use of the colour red interprets the other side to Kayne of his love and passion for music or to the magazine. The design of the contents page is very simple and basic, which makes it easier for the customer. The header is unusually placed as the letters are separated this gives the magazine something different from competitors, and adds a modern effect.

Institution: Vibe magazine is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. Vibe magazine features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by the private equity investment fund Inter Media Partner  and is now issued every-other month with double covers, with a larger on line presence.

Ideology: The grey colour/background has been used but the bold colour attracts the eye because of the red heart that is been placed by a mysterious looking hand from behind Kanyes back, which could interpret that the magazine contains Kanyes personal love life issues.

Audience: Vibe magazine mainly focuses on loving teenagers, adults and urban followers of hip hop culture. As of April 2013 Vibe is now currently owned by Spin Media.

Representation: The featured artist, Kayne West is represented in the double page spread as having personal love life issues/problems.This has been represented as Kayne displaying a very serious intense gaze, with the mysterious looking hand coming from behind Kanyes back which is seen to be holding/grabbing the heart, which could be interpreted as his heart is being pulled in different directions/ being held back. Another interpretation of this image, could suggest that their is a very strong force in his life protecting him.

LIIAR analysis of a music magazine front cover

Language:
Vibe have used the colour red in the mast head as it is bold and contrasts from the back ground which is black and white. The colour red could indicate Vibes passion for music as red is stereotyped as romantic. The sell lines at the left hand side tell the audience a brief view of that weeks topics and gossip. The writing has been separated in black and red writing to make it more visible and makes it clearer for the audience. The main image used in this cover is a close up, this shows the models facial expression and emotions clearly to help show the audience a clear image of feelings.
The design of this magazine mast head is very signature, being that in every vibe magazine the mast head is always the same font, size and located in the same place. However vibe change the colour of the mast head depending on the main image to make it bold to make the masthead stand out and eye catching. This way it enables the customer to recognise the magazine straight away. The headline of the magazine is in the largest text compared to the other headlines featured to show the importance and is one the producers/creators want the public to buy for, also is the cover story so goes with the main image. The cover line 'ain't no such thing as a secret snitch' suggest that a secrete will be revealed, so this persuades the audience to purchase the magazine.

Ideology: The values shown in this magazine cover represent a formal look and could link to the classical traditional jazz appearance which is regularly shown in this magazine because of the hat, glasses, shirt and tie (all of which represent this era). The ethnicity in this magazine is black, as traditionally in the early days most r&b singers were black.

Institution:Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones

Audience:
Vibe audience is relevant to both male and female readers however the genre is aimed at R&B and hip hop, attracting young, urban fans of hip hop and R&B culture.

Representation: The main image has been edited in black and white, this could link photos taken back in the early days photos were in black and white and had no colour.
